Paphiopedilum
More commonly known as the slipper orchid, these easy to grow orchids show off their beautifully mottled leaves and terrestrial orchids that are grown in the ground. Unlike the the plain-green slipper orchids which require a growing temperature range of 10-25°C, the mottle-leaved types require a warmer temperature of 20-30°C with high humidity.
There are over 80 different species (plus many many hybrids) of Paphiopedilum and many of them thrive in the high hills of Northern India and even the lowlands of the Philippines.
Slipper orchids generally flower from November to March, however flowers can pleasantly surprise you and appear at any time of the year. Their flowers can last up to three months and often require the support of a stake.
